Chilas Valley
Chilas is a city situated in the District Diamer of Gilgit–Baltistan. It serves as the divisional capital of the Diamer-Astore Division and is strategically positioned along the Indus River. It holds historical significance as it is connected to the ancient Silk Road through the Karakoram Highway and National Highway, providing access to Islamabad, Peshawar, and Xinjiang’s cities such as Tashkurgan and Kashgar. Chilas is a very old city, and its history dates back to the Indus Valley Civilization. The city was once an important trading centre, and it was also home to a number of Buddhist monasteries. The ruins of these monasteries can still be seen today, and they provide a fascinating glimpse into its past.Historically, the area was home to various tiny republics, governed by tribal councils, The people of the city are a mix of Kohistani, and Dardic peoples.
