Shandur Festival Begins with Exciting Matches as Laspur Wins Big and Yasin Takes a Close Victory

Shandur, GB— The world’s highest polo ground at Shandur, perched at an altitude of 12,000 feet, came alive with color and culture as the much-awaited Shandur Polo Festival officially kicked off. This grand event, jointly organized by the governments of Gilgit-Baltistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, was inaugurated by KP’s Minister for Sports, Syed Fakhar-e-Jehan, along with Information Advisor Barrister Dr. Saif. Senior civil and military officials also graced the vibrant opening ceremony. The event beautifully showcased the rich and diverse cultures of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Gilgit-Baltistan. A thrilling paragliding display and performances by marching bands of Chitral and GB Scouts added charm to the occasion, captivating the large crowd in attendance. In the festival’s opening match, Laspur (Upper Chitral) faced off against Ghizer (Gilgit-Baltistan). Laspur dominated the first half with three goals while Ghizer remained goalless. In the second half, both teams scored three goals each, giving Laspur a solid 6–3 victory overall. The second match featured Laspur B against Ghizer B (Phander), in which Laspur B maintained complete control and overwhelmed their opponents with a commanding 9–2 win. The third match turned out to be the most exhilarating of the day. In a fiercely contested showdown between Yasin and Subdivision Mastuj, Yasin managed to edge ahead with a 3–2 victory, delighting fans with its gripping play. Thousands of spectators from both Gilgit-Baltistan and Chitral have already arrived to witness the festival, with more still en route. A comprehensive security arrangement is in place, with Pakistan Army, Chitral Scouts, Bajaur Scouts, KP Tourism Police, Chitral Police, and Chitral Levies managing safety on the KP side, while Gilgit-Baltistan Police and GB Scouts are actively serving on their side. More exciting matches are scheduled for Saturday, while the grand final and closing ceremony will be held on Sunday. Prime Minister of Pakistan, Mian Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif, is expected to attend as the chief guest.
