Tourism Department Gilgit-Baltistan in collaboration with Serena Hotels celebrates World Tourism Day with Panel Discussion in Hunza

The Tourism Department of Gilgit-Baltistan marked World Tourism Day 2024 with a meaningful panel discussion entitled “Community-Centric Tourism: Promoting Indigenous Culture for Sustainable Economic Empowerment” at the Hunza Serena Hotel. This event gathered experts, government officials, and industry leaders to discuss the potential of community-driven tourism in preserving cultural heritage and fostering sustainable economic growth in the region. The panel emphasized the value of local traditions and crafts as catalysts for tourism, illustrating how they can safeguard indigenous culture while simultaneously generating economic opportunities for local communities. Lal Bano, a panelist and Manager of Karighar, underscored the importance of community-focused initiatives in empowering local artisans, particularly women. She highlighted how these initiatives provide vital platforms for showcasing crafts and preserving traditional skills, thereby enhancing economic independence and cultural heritage. Zameer Abbas, Secretary of Tourism, Sports & Culture for Gilgit-Baltistan, reinforced the government’s commitment to sustainable tourism. He outlined various initiatives aimed at promoting cultural preservation while expanding tourism opportunities in the region.
