Taj Mughal Minar, locally called “Mughali Shikar”, is an archaeological and historical site in Gilgit City. This minar, approximately 700 years old, was built by the Taj-ud-Din Mughal a ruler from Badakhshan after conquering Gilgit in the 1320s. Its height is approximately twenty to twenty-five feet. It is located on the south mountain of Khomar and Jutial, the base of the hill is about one kilometer from Gilgit city. To reach Mughal Minar, one must travel an additional two to three kilometers on a walking trail from the base, which takes about half an hour to cover. Over an extended period, this centuries-old historical structure received no special attention, leading to its structure into a dilapidated state. Keeping in view the significance of this centuries-old historical structure, the Tourism, Culture, Archaeology, and Museums Department Gilgit-Baltistan, through the Gilgit Development Authority (GDA), has successfully rehabilitated and protected the site, without damaging its original form. Taj Mughal Minar (Mughali Shikar) situated on a mountain ridge, offers a commanding view of Gilgit, making it an ideal destination for hikers and travelers.
