Chaqchan Mosque
The Chaqchan Mosque meaning “The Miraculous Mosque” is located in the city of Khaplu at an elevated point and can be viewed from the Khaplu Valley unobstructed. Dating from 1370, the mosque is one of the oldest mosques in the region, and dates from the time when the area's populace converted from Buddhism to Islam. It is a perfect blend of Tibetan, Mughal and Persian style of architecture. It is a double story structure with two winter prayer rooms on the lower level and the main prayer hall on the top floor. This upper floor is wrapped around with a beautiful verandah on all four sides. The mosque consists of a traditional cribbage-and-cator technique, involving stone, adobe, timber and mud. The Chaqchan Jamia Mosque is an exemplary specimen of traditional architecture and it is considered to be one of the most beautiful mosque buildings in Gilgit-Baltistan. According to local accounts, Syed Amir Kabir Ali Hamdani constructed the mosque on an old Buddhist site while preaching Islam in the region.
