Gilgit, July 5, 2025 — As the sacred month of Muharram progresses, large-scale Majalis (religious gatherings) and processions are being held across various districts of Gilgit-Baltistan. In light of these significant events and for security reasons, the Government of Pakistan has declared public holidays on 9th and 10th Muharram nationwide.
Due to the massive Ashura processions expected on these dates, major roads including the Karakoram Highway (KKH) and the Gilgit-Skardu Road are likely to experience serious traffic disruptions.
In addition:
📵 The government has announced the temporary suspension of mobile network services on 10th Muharram in many parts of the region due to security concerns.
🚧 The Government of Gilgit-Baltistan has decided that major roads and routes will be closed, and movement will be restricted in key cities during the day of Ashura.
Tourists and travelers are strongly advised to:
Avoid traveling to Gilgit-Baltistan on 9th and 10th Muharram (5th and 6th July 2025).
Plan your journeys after 12th Muharram, (8th July, 2025) when normal traffic and communication services are expected to resume.
