DTS Gilgit-Baltistan Launches Crackdown on Unregistered Tour Operators to Ensure Regulated Tourism

The Directorate of Tourist Services (DTS), Gilgit-Baltistan, has issued a public notice warning against illegal tourism operations being conducted by unregistered tour operators and guides in the region. The department has expressed serious concern over such unlawful practices, which not only damage Gilgit-Baltistan's reputation as a premier tourist destination but also violate Section 7(1) of the Gilgit-Baltistan Travel Agencies & Tour Operators Act 2020. To address the issue, DTS inspection teams will conduct surprise snap checks under Clause 19 of the Gilgit-Baltistan Travel Agencies & Tour Operators Rules 2023. The goal is to ensure all operators meet mandatory licensing and registration requirements and to curb the activities of unlicensed entities, especially those promoting services through social media without official authorization. All tour operators, travel agents, and guides are mandated to possess valid licenses from the relevant provincial or federal DTS offices. Non-compliance may lead to penalties up to Rs. 50,000, show-cause notices, prohibition on tourist facilitation, and suspension of services under Sections 12 and 15 of the relevant Act. This move reinforces DTS Gilgit-Baltistan’s commitment to responsible and regulated tourism for the safety of visitors and the sustainable development of the region. www.visitgilgitbaltistan.gov.pk
