Ghanche, strategically very important District, is located in east of Baltistan. The word Gang-Chay is of Balti Language meaning “glacier”–“six” and famous Sia-chen Glacier is also located in Ghanche District. In 1974, it was given the status of district and people of the valley selected the name “Ghanche” willingly. Original settlers of Ghanche were Tibetans and Turks. A warrior namely Baig Manthal established a state in Haldi village and believed to be the founder of YABGO DYNASTY, which once ruled whole Baltistan. Khalisa rulers of Kashmir occupied the area in late 19th century by defeating last ruler of Yabgo dynasty and ruled it till 14 august1948. Local Warriors liberated the region and got it annexed with Pakistan.

Khaplu is the headquarter of district Ghanche there are many civic facilities are available. Khaplu proper is a beautiful spot is worth visiting. Khaplu is spread in a radius about two miles. It is a mass of orchard consisting of abundance of apricot tress. River Shyok flows through the entire length of Khaplu town. Khaplu has many historical places to visit i.e Khaplu Palace about 250 years old. The famous Chaqchan masque about 700 year old , the tomb of Mir Muhammad more than 600 year old.
Khaplu Fort also known as Yagbo Khar, is a fine example of a royal residence in Baltistan. Raja Daulat Ali Khan built it in 1840. An earlier fort existed 600 meters above the present location in Thogsi Khar, of which little now remains. The palace is located in the settlement of Doqsa just south of Khaplu main bazzar and west of the Ghanche Nala. Sitting on a unique piece of flat land the fort – palace is fusion of Tibetan, Kashmiri and Mughal architecture.
Once the former seat of government and one of Baltistan’s finest royal residences, Khaplu Palace has been restored from a dire state of dilapidation. The work, undertaken with a high level of technical competence, addressed a range of challenges from structural concerns to historic landscaping in a manner that has retained the authenticity. The Palace has been reintegrated as a vital part of the community through its new function as a small-scale heritage hotel and Balti Folk Museum. The upgrade of the adjacent village’s infrastructure and the creation of new livelihood opportunities have ensured improved well-being for local inhabitants in this remote rural area. The project is testimony to the success of the well-tested approach to mobilizing culture for sustainable development pioneered by the Aga Khan Cultural Service Pakistan.
Thalley valley is one of the rare beauty spot it is about 50 km from Khaplu. The lush green valley and beautiful scenery is marvelous . Thalley broq is attractive place for camping and hiking. A night stay at Thalley Broq is a unforgettable moment, even in the full moon light. Thalley valley also provide track to k-2 base camp from Shinkgkang via Kurboq Sa and Baqma to Aliang Hushey. Thalley Valley also offer a nice track to Shiger valley via Thalley La and gibe you the opportunity to view a series of snow capped mountains.
Hushey is most attractive place to visit in district Ghanche. A chain of lofty peaks i.e Mashabrum ,K-6 , K-7 k-12 , Saltaro Kangri and many more light more than 7000 mtrs exist in this valley. Distance from Khaplu to Hushey is 42 km. This valley has potential for eco-tourism.
A series of three beautiful lakes exist in Ghanche Nallah situated above Khaplu Town and are still un-explore and infamous. This lake is about 20 KM and one can walk to reach about 6 hours by foot.
Kharfaq Lake is situated about 03 KM above Kharfaq Village on road to Khaplu is providing awe inspiring view. The fresh and crystal water lake is famous for trout fish and attractive location for camping and hiking. The lake is stocked with trout fish. One has to walk about two hours to reach the lake.
Machlu villag/ La
Machulu La (5060 mtr) is a view point of the great mountain i.e k2, Broad Peak, Gashabrum-I, GIII , Chogolisa and G-I. It is a five day track and gives amazing view of these mountains. Machulu is one hours drive from Khaplu on road to Hushey.
